Board Members Need to Know What Data is Available
Recently at NPTech Projects we posted a blog about technology for Board members of nonprofit organizations (https://nptechprojects.org/nonprofit-board-members-technology). As requested we did get several responses, and most were centered on the comment we published about only 26% of donors return to donate the following year. What other Donor Insights are available?
It may be closer to 30%
Actually we were wrong from a pure number of donors perspective. A newer study, based upon 2016 data states; 70% of first time donors in a year, do not contribute a second time. Donor retention on average is only at 30%. — 2016 Fundraising Project
Yes, there was another study, and the difference is in consecutive years vs. not contributing a second time, but let’s not lose the point. The good news is that a huge portion of your fund raising efforts result in new donors. The bad news is that donors who have contribute in the past are gone.
Board Discussion Topics
Some wonderful, and profitable discussions to provide donor insights are:
- “What is our year to year return rate for donors?”
- “What did we do or not do that kept repeat donors away?”
- “What do we do to track donors?”
- “Is that the best way?”
- “Is our donor list separate from other lists?”
Some suggestions for follow-up may be:
- “Recognition, how do we recognize our donors?”
- “ Do we tell donors what was accomplished with their donations?
- “ Do we tell them what will they help us to accomplish this year?
We hope these thoughts will be of value to your Board.
